Summary

Insects are constantly exposed to toxic compounds in their environment, whether these are secondary metabolites produced by plants to defend themselves against herbivores or molecules used in pest control. In order to survive, insects have developed sophisticated mechanisms to eliminate these toxic compounds. Detoxification enzymes play a major role, making molecules more hydrophilic and easier for the body to excrete. I will illustrate the role of these detoxification mechanisms, as well as changes in insecticide targets, in resistance and adaptation to xenobiotics in insects.
